American seafood consumption up by nearly 1 pound in 2015

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) annual Fisheries of the United States report [PDF], the average American added nearly an extra pound of seafood to their diet in 2015. United States dietary guidelines recommend eating 8-12 ounces of seafood every week for a healthy diet.

For the Deadliest Catch fans out there, the report shows that for the 19th year in a row, the Alaska port of Dutch Harbor led the nation with the highest amount of seafood landed. In 2015, Dutch Harbor landed 787 million pounds of seafood, valued at $218 million.

Something of interest to the local community is that saltwater recreational fishing saw 8.9 million anglers making almost 61 million trips, resulting in a catch of more than 350 million fish. 57 percent were reported to be released. Striped bass remained the top harvested catch among saltwater recreational anglers, followed by yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, bluefish, and red drum, according to the 2015 Fisheries of the United States report.

Each year NOAA Fisheries produces three annual reports covering different aspects of the status of United States marine fisheries. Fisheries of the United States, published each fall, has been produced in its various forms for more than 100 years. It is the NOAA Fisheries yearbook of fishery statistics for the United States. It provides a snapshot of data, primarily at the national level, on U.S. recreational catch and commercial fisheries landings and value. In addition, data are reported on U.S. aquaculture production, the U.S. seafood processing industry, imports and exports of fishery-related products, and domestic supply and per capita consumption of fishery products.
